Curriculum

Graduation Requirements:

Bryan offers all of the courses needed for students to graduate with a diploma from Lincoln Public Schools.  Due to Bryan’s size, not all offerings are available each semester.  Some students may choose to complete part of their requirements at another high school.

Courses:

Elective courses are assigned based upon the needs and goals of students.  Upon entry to Bryan students are asked whether they are interested in completing high school requirements with no plans for further study or are preparing for entry into a two or four year post-secondary plan.  They are also asked where their interests lie.  Curricular offerings are based upon those needs and interests.

Students may elect to earn part of their credits through an online, computer-based program called NovaNet.

Students may earn additional credits through work experience, a course that blends job-based hours with learning experiences at the work place. Students must hold a job and work at least 10 hours per week. 5 credits per quarter can be earned.

Students at Bryan are encouraged to challenge themselves by taking higher level math, English, science, and social studies courses.  It is our belief that education is an open door that allows a greater variety of career choices.

It is expected that students will earn credits in all of the courses in which they are enrolled.  Staff works closely with students to guide in the development of those study habits essential to success in their course work.

As a student approaches the date of completion of all graduation requirements, communication between school, student, and parents will be increased to ensure that all interested parties are aware of the status of that completion.

Bryan offers 11 courses per period.  It is our belief that some students are more successful in smaller classes so, each class has a maximum of 15-20 students.

Bryan is a leader in innovative ideas pertaining to student learning.  Bryan teachers are “highly qualified” in the subject areas in which they teach, in addition to being well-trained in a variety of methods for teaching a diverse group of learners.  Staff members believe in building relationships with students and feel that the “community of learners” leads to improved achievement levels for all.

School Improvement Goals:

Bryan Community conducts regular research on the achievements of students and develops school improvement goals based upon the results of that research.  Strategies pertaining to these goals are “community-wide” and based upon research that demonstrates their effectiveness.  It is our goal that student achievement continues to improve.

Goals for the 2005-2006 school year are:

  1. All students will improve their math abilities.
  2. All students will improve their writing.
  3. All students will improve their reading.
